Paranormal Activity
Started & Finished: 1/10/09
Even in this consumer-grade media saturated age, I still have yet to see a decent excuse in a fiction film for the cameraperson to film every little thing. It’s just not believable that, when you wake to your girlfriend screaming her face off in the next room at 3am, your first instinct is to grab the camera for everyone to see. It just doesn’t work like that.
Yes, I understand it’s illogical to suspend my disbelief for the ghost story, but not for the lead’s motivations for filming. But it’s another of those minor details that takes me out of the movie. And when your entire film is based around people being immersed in the “reality” of the moment, anything that feels a bit off is magnified exponentially.
But hey, for an indie horror with a tiny budget, the filmmakers did well to scare the audience and create tension where there is none. It’s a short little movie that’s slow to start, and doesn’t completely get its momentum going at full force. But it’s over before you know it, so that’s a plus. It really just made me regret not watching Blair Witch instead.
